Understanding How Each Young Person Learns
Our team takes time to understand how each young person learns, communicates and engages.
A flexible and individualised education pathway where young people feel safe, understood and supported to achieve their potential.
Free 2 Learn is DJJ Healthcare’s specialist Alternative Provision and education service, supporting children and young people who may require an alternative or more individualised approach to education.
Our provision can support children and young people from approximately 6 years old through to 25, depending on their individual needs and education pathway.
Our education provision is led by our Head of Education, Claire, alongside our wider education and support team.
We recognise that education cannot always follow a standard approach.
Our team takes time to understand how each young person learns, communicates and engages.
We build education around the individual, using their strengths and interests to encourage engagement, learning and progression.
Where a young person has an Education, Health and Care Plan, or EHCP, we work to support their identified outcomes and ensure their education is focused on meaningful and measurable progress.
We want education to be meaningful to the individual, recognising that progress can look different for every young person.
At our Highnam provision, we have two classrooms and a dedicated sensory room, allowing us to provide a calm, low arousal learning environment.
This is particularly important for young people who may find larger or more traditional education environments difficult to access.
We work closely with the people around each young person to provide an education pathway focused on their individual needs and outcomes.

We work closely with parents and carers, local authorities, schools, colleges and other professionals involved with the young person.
Where appropriate, this can include working alongside Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, CAMHS and other specialist professionals.
Our aim is to provide a flexible and individualised education pathway where young people feel safe, understood and supported to achieve their potential.
Our provision can support academic learning alongside wider personal development, including communication, emotional regulation, social skills, independence and preparation for adulthood.
We want education to be meaningful to the individual. For some young people, success may be returning to education and gradually increasing their engagement.
For others, it may be achieving academic outcomes, developing greater independence, progressing into college or preparing for employment.
For older young people, our approach can include preparing for the next stage of their lives.
Supporting young people with CV writing and developing the skills they need for the next stage of their lives.
Supporting young people with job applications and preparing for employment.
Developing employability skills and supporting young people to prepare for the world of work.
Preparing young people for further education or college and supporting progression into their next stage.
